ARA-290 – Product Information
The ARA-290 peptide is an 11-amino acid chain derived from the beta domain of the protein erythropoietin, a component of erythropoietin known to have potential tissue protection and repair properties.
This peptide was initially thought to have only one biological function: to increase red blood cells in research subjects. However, this peptide’s continued research led to other biological studies, including neuroprotection and pain relief.
ARA-290 also possesses the potential to affect or even enhance endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFC), based on animal studies. [R]
- ARA-290 is offered as 16mg lyophilized powder.
Furthermore, ARA 290 may also affect specific harmful microorganisms’ innate immune cell functions.

What is ARA-290?
ARA-290, a short peptide, is derived from the erythropoietin helix beta domain (EPO).
EPO has long been known to have more than a direct effect on the bone marrow’s red blood cell production ability.
It has been discovered that a glycoprotein produced by the kidney could stimulate blood vessel growth, increases cell survival, lowers blood pressure, and protects neurons from diabetic neuropathy.
Certain preliminary studies also claim that ARA-290 could be a potential modifying agent for inflammatory bowel disease. [R]
The most interest has been drawn to ARA 290’s novel mechanism of controlling neuropathic pain. The ability of ARA-290 to modulate neuropathic pain is currently the most advanced research area.
Furthermore, the pain treatment using ARA-290 improved researchers’ understanding regarding the integration of the immune system and peripheral nervous system. [R]
Even though the compound is thought to provide the health mentioned above benefits, it is still inadvisable for ARA-290 to be viewed as a form of cure.
Further research is required before ARA 290 can be declared safe for human consumption.
Potential Applications of ARA-290 Peptide
ARA-290 and Chronic Diabetes
ARA 290 improved blood sugar levels in diabetic neuropathy animal models by reducing underlying inflammation. ARA 290 protected pancreatic islets from cytokine-induced damage and programmed cell death (apoptosis). [R] [R]
ARA 290 treatment for 2-4 weeks improved oral glucose tolerance tests and insulin secretion in patients with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. ARA 290 administration restored glucose homeostasis (blood sugar balance) in diabetic patients by targeting the innate repair receptor. [R]
ARA 290 is still a research drug and cannot be used as an effective treatment for diabetes.
Further studies are needed here.
ARA-290 and Tissue Repair
According to research, the ARA 290 peptide binds with tissue-protective receptors (TPR), which helps maintain the tissues’ optimal health by protecting them from harmful inflammatory cells. This, in turn, aids in immune regulation. [R] [R]
In a model of retinal ischemia (insufficient blood flow to the eye), ARA 290 increased cell survival and blood vessel repair. ARA 290 intravenous injection improved kidney function and reduced structural damage in animal models of kidney injury, caused by a lack of blood (ischemia).
ARA 290 also inhibited the production of inflammatory cytokines, extending the survival of transplanted islet cells. [R] [R] [R]
This property of this peptide aids in tissue regeneration, stimulating wound repair and reducing scar formation in the body. [R]
A group of researchers aimed to analyze the protective role of ARA 290 in early renal allograft injury by using a rat model of the renal allograft. Based on their documented results, this peptide can potentially protect the animals from allograft injury since it inhibits macrophage activation and improves renal morphology. [R]
The applications above will still require more in-depth research, and ARA 290 cannot treat any related illnesses effectively.
ARA-290 Peptide and Autoimmune Disorders
ARA-290 peptide has been shown in studies to have potential therapeutic effects in treating autoimmune disorders such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and celiac disease. [R]
Severe liver diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, which is also an autoimmune disease, can result in ulcerative colitis (i.e., inflammation of the colon). While several parenteral solutions are used to treat colitis, they all have serious long-term side effects.
A study was conducted on mice with colitis who were given either a placebo or the ARA-290 peptide. While the placebo-treated mice showed no effects, the ARA-290 peptide-treated mice showed improved results, including improved tissue quality, optimal weight gain, and a better prognosis. [R]
Despite the promising benefits, ARA 290 is still a research compound needing more clinical trials.
ARA-290 and Sarcoidosis
Sarcoidosis is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of inflammatory cells in the skin and lungs, resulting in rashes and cough. Sarcoidosis is also associated with small nerve fiber loss and damage (SNFLD), which causes a malfunction in vital bodily organs and lowers the quality of life.
An initial clinical trial was conducted on sarcoidosis patients, where the effects of the ARA-290 peptide were monitored after three back-to-back intravenous doses were administered over one week. All patients improved by 50% after the study, with no safety concerns reported. [R]
The most recent study included 38 patients (mean age 50 years) with sarcoidosis and associated SNFLD for nearly 8 years. Patients were given 4mg ARA-290 peptide subcutaneously, and the study lasted 16 weeks, including patient follow-up.
After the study, it was discovered that the treatment had a positive prognosis, with improvements seen in all patients. [R]
How Does ARA-290 Peptide Work?
According to scientific evidence, a tissue-protective receptor (TPR) pathway is activated when tissue is injured.
This TPR receptor comprises a beta receptor unit (CD131) and an EPO receptor subunit known collectively as the innate repair receptor. [R]
The ARA-290 peptide molecule binds to this innate repair receptor. It helps to reduce nerve pain, allodynia-led pain (pain caused by a non-pain-inducing stimulus such as sunburn), and inflammation-induced pain. [R]
It is widely assumed that the ARA-290 peptide acts primarily through this IRR-mediated pathway.
TRP channels primarily detect pain stimuli in the human body, including various thermal, chemical, and mechanical stimuli. When such a causative agent is present, one of the TRP channels, TRPV1, is stimulated.
When activated, it causes neuropeptides to be ejected, which causes action potentials to be generated in the nervous system. This action potential is commonly referred to as “pain.” [R]
According to a 2016 study, the ARA-290 peptide acts as an antagonist to this TRPV1 channel, implying that the peptide inhibits TRPV1 actions, and thus no neuropeptides are released, resulting in pain. [R]
This discovery has prompted several additional studies demonstrating that the peptide can be extremely beneficial in pain management.
Safety and Side Effects
ARA-290 peptide is known as an analog of erythropoietin without causing any significant adverse effects in research subjects.
The peptide works by binding to the innate repair receptor (primary pathway) and inhibiting the TRPV1 cycle, both resulting in reduced pain sensations and subsequent pain-related effects. [R]
So far, research has revealed significant results indicating that the peptide could potentially be used to treat autoimmune diseases, act as an adjunct in transplant surgeries, and aid in the treatment of tissue and wound injuries. [R]
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ARA-290 affect blood vessel growth in subjects?
The peptide potentially protects endothelial colony-forming cells, which are needed to repair blood vessels and rebuild damaged tissue. In mouse models, the peptide has been shown to significantly increase the proliferation, migration, and homing movement of blood cells. [R]
How does ARA-290 influence neuropathic pain in research subjects?
ARA 290 could offer analgesic and tissue-protective properties in various diseases, including diabetes and cancer. ARA 290’s analgesic effect is mediated by its anti-inflammatory properties and immunomodulatory functions, or more specifically, by targeting the innate repair receptor (IRR) to reduce inflammation and alleviate neuropathic pain. [R]
