Alpha GPC – Product Details

Alpha GPC is a cholinergic compound naturally produced in the brain. Clinical research has shown that it may potentially improve mental and physical performance. Alpha GPC administration has been found to stimulate the potential release of acetylcholine and boost learning and memory.

In separate clinical trials involving Alzheimer’s patients, alpha-GPC may have potentially improved all disease symptoms and boosted the effects of standard treatment. Additionally, in healthy young males, alpha-GPC treatment had the potential to improve speed, bench-press strength, pull force, and power.

Pure Rawz sells Alpha-GPC for laboratory and research use only.

What is Alpha-GPC?

Alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine (Alpha-GPC) is a cholinergic compound found in the brain. It is a natural physiological precursor of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Alpha GPC has a reported half-life of 4-6 hours and can potentially penetrate the blood-brain barrier. [R][R]

Several clinical trials suggest that alpha-GPC may benefit patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The cholinergic compound has demonstrated the potential ability to reverse all AD symptoms. Aside from that, it has been found to boost the effects of a compound used to treat AD. [R][R]

A review of multiple clinical studies suggests that alpha-GPC may potentially improve memory and attention much better than various other choline supplements. In a rat study, it reduced cognitive decline caused by poor blood supply to the brain, debilitating seizures, and brain damage. [R][R]

Owing to the above alpha-GPC effects, it is a prescription compound for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in some European countries. In the US, the FDA has allowed alpha-GPC’s sale as a dietary supplement.

Pure Rawz sells alpha-GPC for laboratory and research purposes only. [R]

How does Alpha GPC Work

Alpha-GPC exerts its effect by increasing the synthesis and release of acetylcholine in the brain. Following administration, it may be converted to phosphatidylcholine, a metabolically active form of choline, which then may reach cholinergic synaptic endings to increase ACTH synthesis and release. [R]

Other possible effects that alpha-GPC may potentially exert on the brain include:

  • Potentially Raising the levels of GABA. Gamma-aminobutyric acid is the central nervous system’s chief inhibitory neurotransmitter. It regulates how the body responds to feelings of anxiety, stress, and fear. [R][R]
  • Potentially Increasing the synthesis of dopamine. In a rat study, 150 mg/kg/day doses of alpha-GPC increased dopamine levels in the frontal cortex and cerebellum. CDP choline, the other compound used in the study, didn’t affect dopamine levels. [R]
  • May Enhance serotonin activity. In the above study, treatment with alpha-GPC increased serotonin activity in the rats’ frontal cortex and striatum. Serotonin regulates mood, sleep, digestion, sexual libido, and many other functions. [R]
  • Potentially Boosting human growth hormone release. A clinical study found that alpha-GPC treatment had a potentially potentiating effect on GH secretion in young and old volunteers. Data from another study reports the same result. [R][R]

Alpha GPC Research

What follows is a summary of clinical, animal, and cell-based research on alpha-GPC potential benefits. The information presented in this section is for educational purposes only and doesn’t constitute medical advice. Pure Rawz doesn’t sell alpha GPC for human consumption.

1) Alpha-GPC and Alzheimer’s

Alpha-GPC has shown great potential as a therapeutic treatment of AD.

In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, patients with mild to moderate AD were treated with alpha-GPC or placebo. The study continued for 180 days. At the end of the trial, the alpha-GPC treatment group showed potential improvements in all symptoms of AD. [R]

Another study compared the effects of alpha GPC + donepezil administration with those of donepezil + placebo on AD patients. Results from the study indicate that alpha-GPC may increase the effectiveness of donepezil, a cholinergic therapy already used to treat AD. [R]

2) Alpha-GPC and Cognitive Decline

A systematic review of over 20 clinical trials examined the effects of alpha-GPC. In all these trials, alpha-GPC treatment may have improved memory and attention impairment. Some trials also documented potential positive effects on affective and somatic symptoms (fatigue, vertigo). [R]

In a more recent study, alpha-GPC demonstrated potential positive effects on cognitive function. The compound also exhibited a good safety profile and tolerability. Authors conducting the trial suggested that cognitive enhancing potential abilities of alpha-GPC merit further investigation. [R]

Lastly, various pre-clinical studies have also been conducted to examine the nootropic and brain-protecting effects of alpha-GPC. In these studies, alpha-GPC was found to potentially reduce cognitive decline caused by brain damage, poor blood supply to the brain, and seizures. [R][R][R]

3) Alpha-GPC and Athletic Performance

A clinical study set out to investigate the effects of two doses of alpha-GPC on the physical performance of healthy young adults. A 600mg alpha-GPC administration showed promising potential to significantly enhance the treatment group’s running speed, reaction time, and pull force. [R]

In another study, thirteen college-aged males were given either 600 mg alpha-GPC/day or a placebo. The trial’s duration was only six days. Tests conducted at the end revealed that the alpha-GPC group had potentially a superior lower body strength to the placebo group members. [R]

Two more studies highlighted the impact of alpha-GPC administration on performance. In the first study, treatment with 200mg alpha-GPC potentially improved vertical jump power by 8.5%.

Potentially a 14% higher bench press force was noted following 600mg alpha-GPC administration in the second. [R][R]

4) Alpha-GPC and Stroke Recovery

Three uncontrolled studies investigated the potential effects of alpha-GPC treatment on stroke patients. In these trials, treatment with alpha-GPC led to potential cognitive, functional, and motor recovery in the acute phase, thus showing the potential of alpha-GPC as a possible stroke recovery treatment. [R]

Another trial examined the effects of alpha-GPC administration on 2,044 patients suffering from recent stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIA). Results from the trial confirm the potential therapeutic role and excellent tolerability of alpha-GPC for patients with acute stroke or (TIA) [R]

5) Alpha-GPC and Ocular Ischemic Syndrome

Ocular ischemic syndrome is a rare but vision-threatening condition.

In a study involving 51 patients with the condition, adding alpha-GPC to standard therapy potentially improved blood flow to the eyes, sharpened vision, and helped recover the retina.

Clinical and functional examinations revealed that these potential improvements were rapid and stable. [R]

6) Alpha-GPC and Fat Burning

As part of a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, eight healthy male subjects ingested a single dose of alpha-GPC capsule or placebo. Findings from the study revealed potentially significant hepatic fat oxidation among the GPC group and concomitant increases in choline levels. [R]

Frequently Asked Questions

Is alpha-GPC legal?

The FDA has allowed the use of alpha-GPC supplements intended for memory enhancement. In some European countries, alpha-GPC carries the status of a prescription compound.

Does alpha-GPC improve cognitive functions?

A systematic review of over 20 clinical trials showed that alpha-GPC potentially improved memory and attention function, as well as other cognitive functions. Additionally, a recent study has also shown that alpha-GPC may promote natural cognitive function.

Alpha GPC Side Effects

In all the above clinical trials, alpha-GPC was considered safe. But it did cause mild side effects in a fraction of patients. These adverse effects may have included heartburn, nausea, headache, and irritability. Talk to your healthcare provider to know more about alpha-GPC. [R][R][R]
