N-Acetyl Carnosine – Product Information

N-Acetyl Carnosine, sometimes called N-acetyl l Carnosine, is a natural dipeptide containing histidine. The chemical is a source of the pharmacologically important L-carnosine.

N-acetyl l Carnosine could be a chemical for external use as a soothing eye drop compound in future medical and clinical settings.

N-acetyl carnosine could be an effective ophthalmic drug for dispensing drops in cataracts. Based on current data, this chemical may provide temporary relief of minor irritations to the eyes of subjects.

What is N-Acetyl Carnosine?

N-Acetyl carnosine (NAC) is a naturally occurring compound with a chemical structure similar to the dipeptide carnosine. The molecular structure of NAC is identical to that of carnosine, except for an additional acetyl group.

Acetylation protects NAC from degradation by carnosinase, an enzyme that degrades carnosine into its constituent amino acids, beta-alanine, and histidine.

N-acetyl carnosine 1% lubricant eye drops are thought to be an auto-induction prodrug, and natural ocular redox state balance therapies, with implications for the prevention and treatment of serious eye diseases involving pathways of continuous oxidative damage to ocular tissues (cataracts, primary open-angle glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration), and sight-threatening glycosylation processes (diabetic retinopathy and subsequent visual impairment)

Carnosine and its metabolic derivatives, including NAC, are found in various tissues, most notably muscle tissue. As free radical scavengers, these compounds have varying degrees of activity.

It has been proposed that it is especially effective against lipid peroxidation in the eye’s various parts of the lens. NAC is believed to be a vital ingredient in addressing certain eye problems. The peptide is being observed as a dietary supplement (not a drug) and studied to treat age-related damage to the eyes.

Possible Application of N-Acetyl Carnosine

N-Acetyl Carnosine and Cataracts

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Cataract surgery is the only treatment available by medical health professionals. Surgeries also require expensive operating rooms. Patients go untreated when these are not available. A non-surgical treatment option would benefit people with symptomatic cataracts who are unable or unwilling to undergo surgery. [R] [R]

If an eye drop existed that could reverse or even prevent the progression of cataracts, it would be an excellent additional treatment option. A cataract is caused by oxidative stress. Because the protein L-carnosine is known to have an antioxidant effect on the cataractous lens, there is a biochemical reason to investigate L-carnosine as an agent to reverse or even prevent cataract progression. [R] [R]

L-carnosine cannot enter the eye when applied as an eye drop. N-acetyl carnosine, NAC drops penetrate the cornea into the front chamber of the eye (near the cataract), where it is metabolized into L-carnosine when applied to the eye’s surface. [R] [R]

As a result, it is possible that using NAC eye drops could reverse or even prevent cataract progression, improving vision and quality of life. [R] [R]

A particular study of thirty dogs suggests that n-acetyl l carnosine is a potential treatment for cataracts, although more study is needed to substantiate the claim. [R]

Mechanisms of Action

When applied topically to the eye, the NAC chemical acts as a time-release prodrug form of L-carnosine, resistant to hydrolysis with carnosinase, and significantly increases L-carnosine intraocular uptake in the aqueous humor. [R]

The mechanisms of cataract prevention and reversal with NAC ophthalmic drug are discussed, which include prevention of free-radical-induced inactivation of proprietary lens antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase) by intraocular released carnosine, prevention of carbohydrate and metal-catalyzed autooxidation of ascorbic acid-induced cross-linking glycation reactions to lens proteins, universal antioxidant and scavenging activity towards lipid hydroperoxide. Frequently Asked Questions

Can NAC improve vision?

After six months, 90% of the eyes treated with N-acetyl-carnosine improved their visual acuity by 7% to 100%. Glare sensitivity improved from 27% to 100% in 88.9% of carnosine recipients, and image analysis (a measure of visual clarity) improved by 41.5%. [R]

How are NAC drops typically used?

  1. Before using, we recommend reading the enclosed insert carefully to avoid any unwanted outcome.
  2. Detach the lower ring of the product.
  3. Turn the cap anti-clockwise, breaking the seal.
  4. Remove the product’s cap and dispense drops via gentle pressure.
  5. By replacing the cap after every use, you avoid contamination of the NAC drops.
