Shiitake Powder 3:1- Product Information
The shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes) holds a prominent place in Asian cuisine, standing as the most commonly consumed mushroom in the region and second on the global market. Its appeal in the Western world can be attributed to its great flavor, pleasing texture, remarkable resistance to spoilage, and straightforward cultivation process. However, shiitake’s significance transcends culinary delights, as it boasts a profound historical and cultural heritage in Asian traditions, with medicinal usage dating back to the Ming dynasty. [R] In various regions across the globe, shiitake is referred to by diverse names. The term “shiitake” originates from Japanese words, with “shii” denoting the hardwood of Pasania fungus and “take” representing mushrooms. [R]
In Japan, shiitake mushrooms are revered for their purported preventive and therapeutic properties, leading to the production of a valuable extract known as lentinan, embraced by both food and pharmaceutical industries. The extensive list of traditional benefits ascribed to shiitake mushrooms has caught the attention of scientific researchers, who have diligently studied the mushroom’s biochemical attributes and biological effects.[R]
Among the array of demonstrated potential effects, shiitake has been associated with lowering plasma lipids, inhibiting platelet aggregation, exhibiting antiviral and antimicrobial activities, suppressing tumor growth, and enhancing natural killer cell activity. The immuno-potentiating prowess of lentinan has even led to its application in clinical trials for possible cancer treatment in Japan.[R]
How Does Shiitake Work?
Potentially Reducing Fats
Beta-glucan from shiitake mushrooms has been shown to potentially reduce plasma lipids in a way that is distinct from that of oats. While oat beta-glucan slows digestion and absorption of nutrients by making food thicker, shiitake mushrooms reduce cholesterol levels in ways that are unrelated to beta-glucan. In addition to eritadenine, other nutritional components help lower plasma fat levels. The beta-glucan in shiitake mushrooms has a little different molecular structure than that of oats, which may explain why they work slightly differently to reduce fat levels.[R]
Potentially Fighting Tumors
Shiitake mushroom β-glucan lentinan bonds to lymphocytes and particular serum proteins. This causes macrophages in organs such as the liver, spleen, lung, and gut-associated lymphoid tissue to phagocytose lentinan (GALT). This activation of macrophages, T cells, NK cells, and other effector cells results in a rise in the production of antibodies, interleukins (ILs), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-), and interferons (INFs). Macrophages are essential for recognizing foreign substances and communicating with lymphocytes to activate the immune system. The antitumor effect of Lentinan is dependent on CD-positive T cells and can restore suppressed helper T cell activity in tumor-bearing individuals, thereby restoring humoral immune responses to their full extent. Lentinan also activates the complement system, thereby enhancing the cytotoxicity of macrophages against metastatic malignancies. In addition, lentinan increases several immune mediators, such as ILs, colony-stimulating factors, and migration inhibitory factors, which contributes to its overall tumor-fighting efficacy. [R]
Shiitake 3:1 Powder Research
Numerous studies have been conducted on the potential application of Shiitake 3:1 Powder. Below are some of the relevant findings on mushroom products:
Shiitake on Obesity
This study investigated the impact of Shiitake mushroom on countering the effects of a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. Rats were given different doses of Shiitake mushroom powder in their high-fat diets for 6 weeks: low dose (LD-M), medium dose (MD-M), and high dose (HD-M) (at 7, 20, and 60âg/kg, respectively, in their diets). The results demonstrated that the rats on the HD-M diet exhibited the lowest body weight gain compared to the MD-M and LD-M groups. Furthermore, total fat deposition was significantly lower (reduced by 35%) in rats fed the HD-M diet compared to those on the HFD alone. Notably, plasma triacylglycerol (TAG) levels were considerably lower (reduced by 55%) in rats supplemented with HD-M compared to the HFD group. [R]
Shiitake as Anti Tumor
A study was conducted on rodents with tumors whose diet included shiitake mushrooms(L-feed). Researchers studied the effects of the L-feed on two immune system components: macrophages (a type of white blood cell) and natural killer T cells.
Immune-related molecule superoxide anion (SOA) was produced approximately 2.0 to 2.3 times more by the macrophages of rodents fed L-feed, which contained 20% shiitake powder. In addition, the cytotoxic (cell-killing) activities of natural killer cells and killer T cells increased by 1.9 and 1.4 times, respectively, in comparison to those of normal mice without shiitake in their diet. [R]
This demonstrates the anti-tumor potential of shiitake mushrooms, thereby fostering a healthy immune system.
Shiitake on Immunochemotherapy
A study provides compelling evidence in support of immunochemotherapy as a potential treatment for metastatic gastric cancer. The use of lentinan, derived from the fruiting bodies of shiitake mushrooms, in combination with standard chemotherapy was superior in terms of survival outcomes and potential for enhanced therapeutic options for test subjects afflicted with this difficult condition. By enhancing the immune response against cancer cells, lentinan appears to play a substantial role in enhancing the efficacy of conventional chemotherapy, thereby contributing to improved patient outcomes overall. Consequently, this study highlights the acceptance and consideration of immunochemotherapy as a prospective treatment option for advanced gastric cancer.Â
Shiitake and Antiprotozoal Activity
The study looked at the antiprotozoal activity (APA) and mitogenic effect (MGE) of the stationary cultivated mycelium of the medicinal mushroom Lentinus edodes, also known as Shiitake. The study used different amounts of “cultural filtrate” (CF) and “dry ethanol mycelial extract” (ME), both of which were taken from the 25th and 28th days of cultivation. In a lab, the samples of fungi were put up against Paramecium caudatum, a single-celled protozoan. The results showed that L. edodes‘ mycelium had strong antiprotozoal activity (APA) and a mitogenic effect (MGE). The CF samples only showed APA, but the ME samples showed both APA and MGE activities that were very strong. The relationship between the tested mycelial samples and their activities was dose-dependent. Samples with more mycelium showed stronger APA, while samples with less mycelium showed stronger MGE. The study looked at the potential of the Shiitake mushroom’s mycelium as a source of biopreparations with antiprotozoal and mitogenic properties. This shows that mycelium could be used in different kinds of potential medicines. [R]
Shiitake and Wound Healing
Mushrooms are well-regarded in traditional medicine for their healing properties. One of the compounds, β-glucans, found in edible fungi, grains, and yeast, has been shown to possibly support wound healing. The study aims to understand the expression of glucan synthase in Lentinula edodes (shiitake) and Pleurotus eryngii (eryngii) mushrooms, as well as compare organic and conventionally-raised shiitake. Using semi-quantitative RT-PCR, it was found that organic shiitake displayed the highest expression of glucan synthase, followed by conventionally-raised eryngii and shiitake. These initial findings suggest that organic shiitake may be promising for wound healing applications.
Shiitake and Improved Nutrient Absorption
The Shiitake 3:1 Powder has the potential to boost the bioavailability of specific nutrients. For instance, when paired with a vitamin C-rich source, such as fresh citrus fruits, it can increase the absorption of iron from plant-based foods. [R]
